Readings in Jonathan Edwards is a seminar dedicated to the reading and analysis of the works of Jonathan Edwards in his context. As a result of taking this course, the student will be able to: a) identify and describe key elements of the historical, social, and biographical context of Jonathan Edwards; b) demonstrate the ability to read the works of Edwards with a comprehension of the thesis and argumentation of a given work; c) summarize the teaching of Jonathan Edwards in select aspects of systematic theology; d) examine relevant and scholarly secondary resources and demonstrate familiarity with contemporary studies on the theology of Jonathan Edwards; e) demonstrate the ability to engage historical and theological debates surrounding the works of Jonathan Edwards, to analyze the relative merits of related argumentation, and to draw coherent and sustainable conclusions; f) summarize, analyze, and present the results of research on a particular work of Edwards or a specialized aspect of Edward’s theology; and g) apply the significance of the history and theology of Jonathan Edwards to his own personal spiritual growth and to the formation of ministry philosophy.
Dr. Eric Lehner is the Academic Dean and Professor of Theology at Virginia Beach Theological Seminary. He has taught at VBTS since 2005 in a variety of roles as Graduate Assistant, Assistant Professor of Historical Theology, and Associate Professor of Historical Theology. Dr. Lehner earned his academic degrees at Tennessee Temple (BA), Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary (MDiv), Virginia Beach Theological Seminary (ThM), and Clark Summit University (PhD).
